Lawn Mower Carburetor

A lawn mower carburetor is smaller and less complex than a regular automobile carburetor, and even a motorcycle carburetor. It works with the same principles that a car one does, only it is supplying fuel for the engine of the lawn mower instead of an automobile. Air and gasoline go in, the vapors mix, and it powers the engine with combustion.

Clean the Lawn Mower Carburetor often

Lawn mower carburetors have a tendency to get really dirty parts and gasoline. The reservoir in the gas tank and the specific parts can get mucked up with varnish, especially if old gas or oil is left unchecked after repeated use, or if poor grades of these fuels are added to the lawn mower. The best way to clean it is by having a specialist do it, since they can also give it a tune-up and have it running nicely. If you wish to do it yourself though, you can do it with a few standard items:

  • Unattach the lawn mower carburetor and set it on a flat surface.
  • Spray it down and wipe away any dirt and gummy substances with some carburetor cleaner
  • Make sure that you get every part of your carburetor, wiping it down all the way
  • It is best to set something underneath it so that the oil does not drip on surfaces
  • Use compressed air for hard-to-reach crannies

Just like other carburetors, the lawn mower carburetors come with their own kits that you can use to repair components. These come with many small pieces you will need, such as replacement pieces, nuts, bolts, screws, and the like. Some more expensive models have new parts, but purchase these only as they are required by the engine.

Close the needle valve by turning it clockwise. Open it counterclockwise 1-½ turns. Start the engine. When the engine has warmed up sufficiently, close the needle valve slowly until it begins to stall. Open it slowly until it starts to stall from getting flooded. After this has been calibrated, set it for a nice middle ground between both stall states.
